Te Whariki:
Mana Atua/Well-Being: Children experience an environment where they are kept safe from harm.
Statement of Intent:
To ensure that the health and safety of all tamariki enrolled at the preschool is maintained at all times.
To ensure that all tamariki are supervised and protected at all times while attending our preschool.
The preschool operates with a staff:child ratio of 1 adult to every 10 children at all times.
Purpose:
Windsor Montessori Preschool will offer all tamariki high quality learning experiences and opportunities while ensuring appropriate supervision is provided at all times.
Procedures:
The Head Kaiako will ensure:
-
The staff roster ensures the correct ratio is met at all times. The preschool uses the “Discover Software” programme which records the staff roster to clearly indicate when the percentage of early childhood registered kaiako falls below the required ratio
-
Kaiako, including relief teachers, students and volunteers will be made aware of the Supervision Plan as part of their induction process
-
Kaiako will position themselves so that tamariki are kept in sight at all times and are well supervised
-
Kaiako may not leave their designated area until a replacement kaiako is available to take over from them
-
Kaiako will avoid activities or actions that will distract them from supervision, such as speaking to other kaiako for long periods of time, speaking with parents or visitors and answering phone calls. Kaiako will at all times have an awareness of what is happening within the learning environment
-
All tamariki are supervised by kaiako until their parent/whānau/caregiver arrives to collect them. Tamariki are not allowed to leave the preschool with a person other than their parents unless verbal or written permission is given for another known person to collect them. Whānau will be asked to introduce them in person or by sending a photo ID prior to any collection.
-
There is adequate monitoring of the bathroom through the open doorway and through the viewing window in the kitchen
-
Any adults visiting the preschool will be supervised by kaiako and will be visible at all times
-
All visitors will be required to sign the Visitor’s book on arrival stating the time of arrival, time of departure and purpose of their visit
-
The office is not accessible to tamariki. The kitchen area is also not accessible to tamariki unless they are with an adult who will be monitoring them closely and carefully
-
Kaiako will be rostered to ensure both indoors and outdoors are monitored at all times - See Supervision Timetable below
-
Kaiako will have sustained interactions with tamariki where they will work either on a one to one basis or in groups throughout the day to support and extend learning and foster positive growing relationships
-
Tamariki will not have access to the garden area unless a kaiako is present with them. When outside, kaiako will position themselves where they can visibly see all tamariki. If kaiako need to leave tamariki at any time e.g. go to the bathroom, get a resource, or follow a tamaiti to another area as a result of a learning interest, they will clearly communicate this to another kaiako so that full supervision is provided and tamariki are constantly monitored at all times
-
A risk assessment and management plan is carried out before an excursion takes place. The risk assessment will consider and identify the number of adults required to ensure continuous adequate supervision throughout the excursion - See Excursion Policy
-
All staff have completed a Police vetting check. No person with a criminal record or any offence against tamariki will be employed
-
Kaiako will regularly evaluate the efficiency of the Supervision Plan at staff meetings.
