Te Whāriki:
Mana atua/Well-being Goal 1: Tamariki experience an environment where their health is promoted.
Mana atua/Well-being Goal 4: Tamariki are kept safe from harm.
Statement of Intent:
At Windsor Montessori, we acknowledge the importance of sun protection and want kaiako and
tamariki to enjoy the sun safely. We aim to promote the importance of sun protection for tamariki.
We provide a sun safe environment by being committed to protecting tamariki and kaiako from the
risks of UV radiation. Our Sun Protection Policy follows the Cancer Society’s minimum criteria.
Skin cancers are the most common form of cancers in Aotearoa New Zealand. The mortality rate
from skin cancer is among the highest in the world. Sunburn, particularly in childhood and
adolescence increases the risk of melanoma. Limiting ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure during
preschool years could reduce the incidence of skin cancers in later life.
Procedures:
● Parents/whānau/caregivers are encouraged to bring named sun hats for their tamariki. If
they are unable to or forget to do this, we will provide spare hats.
● Parents are asked to apply sunscreen before arriving. Sunscreen will be available at sign in desk for parents to use. Kaiako will apply sunscreen before tamariki go outside and record time of application.
● Sunblock is provided by the preschool. Tamariki requiring a special sunblock due to skin
allergies must provide their own.
● At the beginning of term one and term four parents/whānau/caregivers will be asked to
apply sunscreen prior to bringing them to preschool in the morning. This is to be noted on
the sign in sheet upon arrival.
● Kaiako role-model the use of hats and sunscreen outside.
● In term one and term four, whānau will be asked to send their tamaiti to Montessori wearing
clothing that covers their shoulders (no sleeveless tops/dresses) as we recognise that
shoulders are sensitive to burning.
● Drinking water is available at all times. During warmer weather, water containers will be put outside for tamariki to access.
● Areas of shade are provided i.e. trees on the bark, sandpit, covered areas.
● We ensure that parents/whānau/caregivers and kaiako are informed of the preschool’s
Sunsmart measures.
● We will encourage tamariki to sit/work in the shade where it is available.
● Tamariki are taught how to stay safe in the sun by learning why it is important to protect
their bodies by wearing sun hats and putting sunscreen on. During the warmer seasons,
kaiako will support the tamariki learning through songs, stories and any relevant information
available.
