Te Whāriki:

Mana atua.Well-being Goal 3: Tamariki and adults experience an environment where they are kept safe from harm.

Statement of Intent:

Windsor Montessori Preschool recognises the importance of keeping the preschool free of vermin and pests for the health and safety of tamariki, kaiako and whānau.

Management will have clear guidelines to follow to ensure the preschool is free from pests and vermin, and should such an infestation occur, clear guidelines will be followed to deal with the situation immediately to achieve an effective outcome for all involved.

Prevention:

  • We will ensure a regular and high standard of hygiene is practiced throughout the preschool.

  • The outdoor area will be checked daily for any signs of pests.

  • The premises will always be kept clear of rubbish.

  • Rubbish will be placed in the appropriate recycle bins.

  • Rubbish from lunch-boxes unable to be recycled at preschool will return home for appropriate disposal.

  • All food scraps will be disposed of in either the worm or the compost bins. These will be monitored regularly to ensure they are kept free from pests.

  • Waste care bins with lids will be provided for both recycling and general rubbish. A separate bin with lid will be provided for food scraps that are unable to go into the worm/compost bins.

  • Kaiako will ensure cleaning schedules are upheld and any sign of pest droppings or infestations will be passed on to the head kaiako. Bins containing food is emptied and washed every week.

Control:

  • The head kaiako will assess the extent of the pest or vermin problem.

  • Lay trays or bait if possible, out of reach of reach of tamariki.

  • If needed, a specialist will be notified to assist with the problem.

  • The problem will then be monitored and re-assessed if necessary.

  • The type of control carried out will depend on the type of pest or vermin.
