While the majority of tamariki enrolling in preschool are toilet trained, a number of tamariki of preschool age are not developmentally ready.
This policy aims to set out procedures to support whānau and their tamariki towards toilet training.
Our commitment of care to all tamariki is our priority. We aim to support tamariki care and wellbeing on a daily basis in line with their individual needs.

-
To support whānau and their tamariki to develop independence for toileting.
-
To implement procedures so that all kaiako are informed and consistent with procedures to support tamariki who need changing.

To ensure the rights of tamariki are maintained and their dignity is respected.
-
To maintain a high level of hygiene at the preschool.
Strategies/Guidelines:
-
Tamariki who need support with toileting will be reminded and encouraged to go to the toilet every regularly or as necessary depending on the individual tamaiti, until they are confident and independent to do this on their own.
-
Toilet area used for changing is kept warm and are hygienically cleaned daily.
-
If a tamaiti needs changing, kaiako will ask if they are ready to be changed and will allow time for the tamaiti to respond.
-
A basket with supplies is kept in the adults toilet along with a changing mat.
-
During the changing process, kaiako who are assisting tamariki will ensure:
-
That their own hygiene needs are met
-
That other kaiako are aware of the assistance being given
-
That they remain visible or within hearing distance of other kaiako. This is for the protection and safety of all concerned.
-
Any assistance is recorded in the toileting book and parents/whānau/caregivers are informed at collection time.
-
-
Gloves are worn and the changing mat will be sprayed with anti-bacterial spray and wiped with paper towels before and after changing tamariki.
-
Wet wipes will be used to clean tamariki.
-
Soiled nappies/pull ups will be put in plastic bags and put in the red bin outside.
-
All tamariki are treated with dignity and respect throughout the process.
-
Kaiako will talk to tamariki throughout the changing process letting them know what is happening and what they are doing. In addition, kaiako will ensure that nappy changing is a relaxed and positive experience and a time to promote independence. Tamariki will feel safe and supported at all times.
