Bi-Cultural Policy V4

Education Regulations (Early Childhood Services) 2008, Licensing Criteria C110-C112.

 

Te Whāriki:

Mana atua/Wellbeing - Goal 1; Tamariki/children experience an environment where their emotional wellbeing is nurtured.

Mana whenua/Belonging - Goal 1; Tamariki/children experience the connecting links with their family and wider world are affirmed and extended.

Mana tangata/Contribution - Goal 1; Tamariki/children understand there are equitable opportunities for learning irrespective of gender, ability, age, ethnicity or background.

Mana reo/Communication - Goal 3; Tamariki/children experience stories and symbols of their own and other cultures.

 

Statement of Intent:  

To ensure the curriculum offered to tamariki/children reflects the unique place of Māori as tangata whenua of Aotearoa/New Zealand.

Kaiako acknowledge that bi-cultural development can be achieved by implementing a bi-cultural lens across all curriculum areas blending in te reo Māori me ngā tikanga Māori into all aspects of teaching, including concepts of te ao Māori, being the Māori world view (kaupapa Māori).

 

Purpose:  

Tamariki/children are given the opportunity to develop knowledge and understanding of the cultural heritages of both parties of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

 

Procedures:

  • Kaiako will incorporate te reo Māori and waiata  into programme planning and learning experiences.

  • Kaiako will strive to learn the correct pronunciation of and use te reo Māori in their everyday teaching practice.

  • Kaiako will use inclusive communication strategies to engage Māori whānau in contributing to the learning of their tamariki.

  • Kaiako will build strong partnerships with parents/whānau/caregivers and draw on their knowledge of local tikanga, history and language to enhance our learning programme.

  • Kaiako will address the educational aspirations of Māori whānau to encourage tamariki to reach their full potential.

  • Kaiako will attend professional development to strengthen their understanding and knowledge of te reo Māori me ngā tikanga Māori, Tātaiako to enhance the ways that these notions can be incorporated in our learning programme.

  • Our planning, curriculum, assessment and evaluation will be based on a solid understanding of Aotearoa/New Zealand’s bi-cultural early childhood education curriculum, Te Whāriki.

  • Parents/whānau/caregivers will be made to feel welcome at our preschool with their views and perspectives being valued at all times.

  • Windsor Montessori will seek to provide a learning environment containing resources that reflect the natural world.

  • Kaiako will be encouraged to liaise with local iwi to ensure that our programme provides for and is reflective of tikanga of the local tangata whenua of our area.

  • Policies and procedures will endeavour to reflect a bi-cultural approach to teaching and learning.

  • Visual aids and language prompts are displayed in and around our learning environment to encourage kaiako, tamariki and other adults to extend their knowledge of te reo Māori me ngā tikanga Māori.
